About the project

Located in Hangzhou, China: Future Car Park focused on redefining the traditional notion of car parks by integrating innovative structural solutions that combined functionality with aesthetic appeal. In close collaboration with Daniel Statham, Atelier One provided concept structural engineering support in the creation of a series of towers that make up the overall cark park structure and its ability to store 500 vehicles within the city centre.

The process

Atelier One's structural expertise ensured the creation of a robust, yet visually striking, structural strategy to simplify the delivery of this extraordinary project. Comprised of a series of towers all connecting at the rooftop provide both vertical support and lateral stability to the overall structure. Three are solely utilised for stacking cars, while others act as transportation for people in drop off and collection alongside providing access to the rooftop. Metal louvred cladding forms the façade of the towers leaving slight visibility of the constant movement of the cars alongside acting as natural source of ventilation. After leaving their car at the basement level, an automated system parks the car, regularly moving it throughout the day for efficiency to make it readily available for the drivers requested collection time.

The outcome

With an overall coverage area of 30740 sqm, Future Car Park stands as a testament to innovation in infrastructure projects. The project not only serves its functional purpose but also adds significant interest to the urban landscape. The primary structural forms were a direct interpretation of the functional and access requirements but give a strong dynamic visual impact at this scale.
